Rachael and Marty were both born into multi-generational farming families from Niagara-on-the-Lake. Throughout their youth, they developed a profound respect and understanding of Niagara and its agricultural pulse. A second-generation Niagara farmer, Marty grew up among the vines on his family’s 60-acre farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where he developed a deep respect for the land and a passion for winemaking. After honing his craft in renowned wine regions such as California, New Zealand, and British Columbia, Marty brings a global perspective back to Niagara, driven by his commitment to crafting wines of exceptional quality.
Having expanded their skills abroad on prestigious wine projects in various cool-climate wine regions before returning home to Niagara, Marty and Rachael were ready to see their local vision come to life with international methodology.
In 2013, inspired by the rich history and exceptional wines of Champagne, they discreetly began their sparkling wine project, laying down their first bottles with a blend of excitement and anticipation.
With a legacy shaped by passion, dedication, and visionary leadership, Peter Gamble’s involvement with York Vineyards is woven deeply into its foundation, as he has served as a mentor to Marty since the beginning. When Marty and Rachael set out to establish York Vineyards as Canada’s first sparkling wine house, they knew Peter’s unmatched expertise and guidance would be essential. Having worked together in the past, Peter recognized Marty’s potential and passion for winemaking, creating a trusted bond that would later inspire York’s unique vision.
Peter’s journey, however, has always been grounded in his commitment to the craft of winemaking itself. As a sought-after consultant, he has shaped the path of some of Canada’s most exceptional wine producers, creating award-winning wines in Ontario, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, and even as far afield as Argentina.

In 2016, Marty and Rachael’s journey reached a pivotal moment. They discovered the historic York House, built circa 1818—a Neo-Classic architectural gem that seemed to be waiting for them. The moment they stepped onto the property, Marty and Rachael felt an undeniable connection to the land. The house, with its rich historical tapestry and limestone-rich soils, provided the perfect place to plant an estate vineyard dedicated to sparkling wine. The two knew this was where they could bring their vision to fruition.
